Practical Technology Consulting for Growing Moroccan Businesses

A practical guide to choosing technology priorities, comparing costs and running a measurable pilot before committing to a wider rollout.

Practical Technology Consulting for Growing Moroccan Businesses / Conseil technologique : un guide pratique pour les PME marocaines

If your business is growing but orders, customer records and reporting still depend on repeated manual work, where should you invest first? A new management system, better integrations, custom software or additional technical staff?

Our recommendation is to make technology consulting answer those questions before implementation begins. Start with one operational problem, compare credible options and require evidence before expanding the investment. This guide proposes a practical framework for doing that.

Start with the business constraint, not the software catalogue

The 2026 OECD D4SME survey identifies time constraints, maintenance costs and skills gaps as continuing barriers to effective digital implementation. Its non-representative sample covers SMEs in 12 OECD countries, not Morocco; treat it as international context rather than a benchmark for Moroccan businesses.

For your own diagnosis, select a workflow such as enquiry-to-quotation, order-to-delivery or invoice-to-payment. Ask the people doing the work to demonstrate actual cases, including exceptions.

  • Measure the starting point: processing time, corrections, missed follow-ups or hours spent preparing reports.
  • Locate the friction: repeated entry, unclear approvals, missing information or unreliable exchanges between systems.
  • Define success: agree on an improvement target and a quality safeguard before choosing a tool.
  • Name an owner: appoint someone with authority to resolve process questions and approve changes.

For example, a distributor could investigate why confirmed orders need to be re-entered before dispatch. This is an illustrative scenario, not an Altweeb customer result. The first question should be whether the process or an existing integration can be improved—not whether the entire system needs replacing.

Require a decision brief before a delivery proposal

We recommend commissioning a bounded discovery phase with explicit deliverables. Ask for a workflow map, an inventory of relevant systems and data, a prioritised problem list, an options comparison and a costed pilot proposal. Include a recommendation on what not to change.

Compare configuration, integration and custom development

Use the following questions to test competing approaches rather than assuming one is always best:

  • Configure existing software: can it meet the essential workflow without extensive workarounds? Test permissions, reporting and data exports.
  • Connect existing systems: are interfaces available, who maintains them and what happens when a transfer fails or creates a duplicate?
  • Develop a custom component: which requirement justifies it, and who will maintain, document and test it after launch?

For a Moroccan operation, put relevant working conditions into the acceptance tests: French or Arabic documents where needed, right-to-left display if required, MAD amounts, mobile access, actual connectivity conditions and exchanges with the accountant’s software. Treat these as requirements to verify, not capabilities to assume.

Compare the full cost over the same period

Request a three-year cost scenario for each option, clearly distinguishing supplier quotations from estimates. Include subscriptions, implementation, data cleaning, migration, integrations, training time, support, security, maintenance and eventual exit costs. Ask for a second scenario with more users or higher transaction volumes.

Separate time released from cash savings. If a team spends fewer hours entering data, specify how that capacity will be used; do not automatically count it as a reduction in payroll.

Make security and data handling selection criteria

The NIST Small Business Quick-Start Guide recommends practical measures including multifactor authentication, restricted access, software updates and tested backups. Use it to structure the security discussion; it is guidance, not a Moroccan compliance certificate.

For the pilot, ask who owns administrator accounts, who removes departing users, how restoration will be tested and who responds to an incident. Put responsibility for each action in writing.

Before choosing a service that handles personal data abroad, consult the CNDP guidance on international data transfers. It sets out permitted transfer circumstances and states that transfer authorisation depends on approval of the underlying processing declaration or authorisation request.

As a procurement step, ask vendors to identify hosting locations, subprocessors and overseas support access, then obtain qualified advice on the applicable formalities. This is a planning checklist, not legal advice or a finding that a particular service is compliant.

Check support programmes without assuming eligibility

Maroc PME’s digitalisation page lists support for digital maturity audits, solution selection and implementation assistance. The published eligibility criteria on this page target industrial or industry-related businesses with annual turnover between MAD 10 million and MAD 200 million. This is not a universal entitlement for all SMEs.

Separately, an official announcement published on 9 April 2026 describes the launch of DigiTPME to coordinate digitalisation support. An announcement is not confirmation that your project has funding. Verify current application routes, eligible expenditure and approval requirements before including assistance in your budget.

Use a staged pilot with a stop-or-scale decision

The following 90-day structure is an editorial planning suggestion, not a delivery guarantee. Adjust it to integration complexity and any required approvals.

  1. Days 1–15: establish the baseline. Observe the workflow, review data quality and agree on one primary outcome measure.
  2. Days 16–30: select the approach. Compare options, confirm costs and define acceptance tests, security responsibilities and rollback arrangements.
  3. Days 31–60: pilot with a limited team. Train users on realistic tasks and record errors, exceptions and support requests.
  4. Days 61–90: evaluate. Compare results against the baseline and targets. Expand, revise or stop based on the evidence.

Include staff time for training and feedback. If AI is proposed, require a comparison with a simpler rules-based approach and define human review before allowing customer-facing outputs or consequential actions.

Choose a consulting partner who leaves you in control

When comparing Altweeb or another provider, request named responsibilities, clear exclusions, milestone acceptance criteria and disclosure of vendor incentives. Agree on access to accounts, documentation, data exports and, where relevant, source code and intellectual-property terms.

Ask the consultant to distinguish advisory work from implementation and ongoing support. If temporary specialists will join your team, identify who will prioritise their work and retain the knowledge afterwards.

Conclusion: buy clarity before complexity

Begin with a measurable operational constraint, a bounded diagnostic and a pilot you can evaluate. The outcome to seek is not simply another application: it is a justified investment decision, an accountable owner and a process your team can operate without permanent dependence on the supplier.
